The company employs three initiatives to recognize and highlight this revered segment of our team: the Navigator program, Operation IMPACT and VERITAS.
The Navigator program connects employees with mentors who can provide networking opportunities, answer cultural questions, offer guidance and listen like a friend. The program supports two particular groups of employees: those working on global assignments and veterans. Through Navigator, newly hired veterans are paired with colleagues who are veterans themselves. There are core differences between military command and a corporate enterprise. Being partnered with veterans in business who understand those differences firsthand helps provide a smoother transition into our company’s operating style and culture. Susan Fitzgerald, program manager, said, “The Navigator program is a direct example of how we’re working to build the best culture at Northrop Grumman. It promotes community and friendship-building among new and experienced employees. Those who are paired through the program determine what their relationship needs to be — whether it lasts three months or for one’s entire career."
Operation IMPACT (Injured Military Pursuing Assisted Career Transition) began in 2005 to provide career transition support to military service members who have been severely injured. Members gather annually to reinforce camaraderie and strengthen connections. Local events are held as well, such as a casual barbecue dinner where Operation IMPACT hires can get to know one another and exchange personal and work experiences.
VERITAS stands for Veterans, Employees and Reservists Inspired to Act and Serve. This all-inclusive employee resource group is committed to recognizing and supporting active-duty and reserve service members, members of the National Guard and veterans through community outreach and networking programs aligned with company- and sector-wide business objectives. “We truly care about our veteran employees at Northrop Grumman, and mentoring can take on many forms,” said retired U.S. Air Force Col. Mike Miller, VERITAS chapter chair at Space Park in Redondo Beach, California. “Engaging actively with our veteran employees through VERITAS-led events helps them find new opportunities to form mentoring and networking relationships.”
Tim deCordova, a U.S Army veteran and quality engineer at Northrop Grumman, chairs the Melbourne, Florida, site’s VERITAS chapter. He leads community outreach efforts, such as donation drives benefiting the USO. “This summer, we’re kicking off several great initiatives,” said deCordova. “We’re working with the Veterans Transition Facility in Melbourne to develop a curriculum on résumé writing and interviewing skills that will help homeless veterans improve their employment options.” He also cites the Kids in Support of Soldiers initiative, through which employees and their children will prepare care packages for overseas military personnel this July. Additionally, by year end, VERITAS will coordinate a Lunch and Learn on the Transition Assistance Program. This program provides information, tools and training to ensure military service members and their spouses are prepared for the next step in civilian life. Topics covered include education, finding a job in the public or private sector and starting a business.
“Many veterans have been fortunate to find good jobs within Northrop Grumman,” said deCordova. “They help the company grow and succeed. There is great value in giving back to those who have served their country and have so much to offer in so many ways.”
